Adelene Shapiro

Adelene "June" Shapiro, born June 1, 1917, the youngest of 16 children of Isaac and Alice Gartner, died on March 10, 2011. A lifetime resident of Topeka, she was married for 30 years to Roy Shapiro, State Controller of Kansas until his death in 1967.

June graduated from Topeka High School in 1934 and endowed the present landmarked building with a refurbished entrance hall and veranda, which bears a bronze plaque in her honor. She was a lifetime member of Temple Beth Sholom as well as an active homemaker, community volunteer and philanthropist, donating generously to Stormont-Vail Hospital, the Menninger Foundation, the United States Holocaust Museum in Washington DC and numerous other local and national charities.

June is survived by her daughter, Jan Shapiro Abrams of New York City and her son, Mark Shapiro of Boulder, Colorado, as well as six grandchildren; Roy, Cleo, Jed, Veronica, Samuel and Alexandra; five great-grandchildren; Eric, Isla June, Lila, Kiki and Owen.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 pm Monday at Topeka Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Sensory Processing Disorder Foundation, 5420 S. Quebec St., Ste. 135, Greenwood Village, CO 80111. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
