Adelbert "Del" Henry Grau was born December 31, 1919 in Mound Township, Phillips County to Henry and Anna Bach Grau. He died January 23, 2006 at Rolling Hills Health Center, Topeka, at the age of 86.
He was baptized January 25, 1920 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Stuttgart, Kansas and confirmed on March 25, 1934 at Zion Lutheran Church, Belmont Township, Phillips County, Kansas.
Del was raised on a farm in Phillips County and attended a rural grade school. He graduated from Phillipsburg High School in 1938.
He was united in marriage to Johanna Ruth Schulz on September 19, 1943 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Topeka.
Del farmed in Phillips County until moving to Topeka in 1952. He worked for a while at Shawnee Manufacturing Company and then for All City Appliance until he retired.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church since moving to Topeka.
Del enjoyed electronics having tinkered with radios as a boy. He also enjoyed woodworking and made toys for his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years; two sons: Steven (Evelyn) Grau, Dallas, Texas and Michael (Denise) Grau, Topeka; two daughters: Karen (Robert) Wagstaff and Linda Currie, both of Topeka; six grandchildren: Katherine (David) Meis, Anna (David) Kubalak, both of Dallas, Texas; John Grau, Topeka; Morgan Grau, Topeka; Sean (Amy) Slattery, Kansas City, Missouri; and Jonathan Currie, Topeka; one sister: Wilma (Harold) Beckman, Phillipsburg; five great-grandchildren: Benjamin Meis, Amelia Meis, Jackson Meis, Eleanor Meis, and Elizabeth Meis all of Dallas, Texas; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his adoptive stepmother, Dela Meyer Grau; a son-in-law, Anthony Slattery; and two great-grandsons, Matthew Meis and William Meis.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, January 26, at St. John's Lutheran Church with Pastor Peter Lange officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Grau will lie in state at 12 noon Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Midtown Chapel and the family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. that evening.
