A. Raymond (Ray) Christian, 94 of Topeka, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away quietly in his sleep April 21, 2007 at Brewster Place.
He was born June 12, 1912 in Camp Verde, AZ. His family returned to Kansas City, KS where he attended elementary thru high school. His initial work experience was with "Helzbergs Jewelers" in Kansas City, MO. He married Alice Berquist, June 1933. They had three children. He moved the family to Topeka in 1942 to manage Sante Fe Watch Company. In 1950 he opened "Ray Christian Jewelers" using his slogan "it's OK to Owe Ray". He was one of the first jewelers to use television. The sponsorship of a 30 minute show featuring a new pianist, "Liberace" was remembered by customers long after it was cancelled.
Survivors include: his wife Bea of Brewster Place, his sons; Raymond Jr., wife Marilyn K. (Buck), Twin Lake, MI, Gary, wife Margaret (deceased) Topeka; daughter; Ruthanne (Chris) Koger, husband Kenneth, Horton,KS ; step sons Greg Durston, wife (Marti) Dallas,TX, Gary Durston wife (Paula) Gold Canyon, AZ; eight grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by wives, Alice G. Christian (Berquist) and Lorene Christian (Winter).
A Memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday April 27, 2007 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Private family inurnment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
