Ronald “Ross” Cummins (69) passed away peacefully on July 1, 2024, at home with his family nearby, after a courageous fight with cancer.
Born on July 16, 1954, to Walter and Irene Cummins, Ross grew up in Haven, Kansas, the youngest of five children. His childhood was filled with joy and adventure, including long family road trips with his mom, dad, and sisters, Cindy and Pat, to California to see his brother Glen. There were also annual family reunions with countless cousins, aunts, and uncles.
Ross attended Haven High School with the class of 1972, where he played football. He graduated from Fort Hays State University. Through the years, he remained close with his childhood friends, Chuck and Zeb, and his college best friend, Jeff. He always cherished these friendships. In 1977, he married the love of his life, Cherry (Finch). They went on to have two children and raised their family in Hutchinson, Kansas. They were married for almost 47 years. Cherry was his “angel” until the very end. He was forever proud of his children and called them his “greatest accomplishment.” In 2002, with the kids out of the house, they moved to Olathe, KS.
Ross worked for Panhandle Eastern Pipeline from 1978 until his retirement in 2016. After his retirement, he and Cherry moved to Lawrence, KS, to be close to their beloved grandchildren, Claire and Caroline, who fondly called him “Pops.” In retirement, Ross began working part-time at Eagle Bend Golf Course, his dream “job.”
It was nearly impossible to hear Ross laugh without joining in. Ross had been a diehard Chiefs and K-State Wildcats fan since childhood. He enjoyed watching golf and Western movies. Ross also loved grilling for family and friends, making beer, and perfecting the recipes and process.
Ross was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Irene Cummins, and his siblings, Glen, Richard, Patricia, and Cindy. He is survived by his wife, Cherry, daughter Courtney (Jason) Black, son Tyler (Dana) Cummins, and his two grandchildren, Claire and Caroline. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and countless friends. He will be deeply missed by all who know and love him.
A public visitation will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, July 8th, followed by a service at 2 p.m. at Lawrence First Church of the Nazarene, 1470 N 1000 Rd, Lawrence, KS 66046. A Celebration of Life will be held immediately following the service from 3-6 p.m. at Arterra Event Gallery, 2161 Quail Creek Dr, Lawrence, KS 66047.
