Thelma Jane Martin

May 12, 1929 — February 10, 2024

Thelma J. Martin, age 94, of Topeka, KS, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, February 10, 2024.

Thelma was born in Rossville, KS, May 12, 1929 the daughter of Shirley and Edna Parr. She was the youngest of five daughters, Lois (Carl) Clanton, Lorene (Marlin) Harth, Shirley Maxine (Joe) Stadler and Thora (George) Stadler all who preceded her in death.

She was raised through high school on a farm outside of town. She attended Rossville High School where she excelled. She was Valedictorian of her class, participated in plays, band, as well as many other activities. She was involved in her church and youth activities, too.

Thelma married Francis "Bud" Martin August 8, 1948. They were married for 56 years until his death in 2004. They raised four children in the house that they built together and that Thelma lived in for 70 years; Sheryl (Tom) Ouellette, Pam (Doug) Cullen Bass, Debra (Brad) Matthews and Sam (Danette) Martin.

Thelma loved five generations of grandkids and was a willing babysitter. She operated a "shuttle service" taking kids to and from school. She taught them ABC's, sang songs and played many games. She enjoyed attending any event she was made aware of including athletic events, music programs, school plays, etc.

She loved the tradition of gathering all of the grandkids on Christmas Eve and reading the Christmas Story to them.

Thelma was a homemaker, active at Westside Christian Church, a Girl Scout leader for all three girls and transportation to swim meets and anything her children needed.

She and Bud also loved to travel and enjoyed taking off in their RV. They shared many of these RV adventures with their grandkids.

Thelma was famous with the family for her narrated camcorder videos and taco dinners.

She worked during the Legislative session in the document room. Later she worked in Legislative Services until her retirement.
Thelma lived her life like her parents instructed her. The following is a note from her mother:

"My prayer for you now is that you continue in our family relationship of loving and helping each other, ever teaching your little ones to live as our Heavenly Father would have us live, not forgetting to work for the good of the community, depending on Prayer for His guidance. Faith, Family, Fellowship"

Cremation is planned and will be followed by a private family service. In honor of Thelma memorial contributions may be made to Westside Christian Church-Kitchen Fund, 432 SW Lindenwood, Topeka, KS 66606.
