William G. Haynes, 92 of Topeka, passed away on Wednesday, January 3, 2024. William was born on January 25, 1931 in St. Joseph, MO., and the son of Emily and Floyd Haynes. William had a sister, Barbara Morgan who is no longer living.
William attended the Topeka Public Schools (Boswell Junior High and Topeka High School) and joined the Air Force ROTC. He was the Rush Captain for the Alpha Delta Fraternity and after graduating with a degree in economics at Washburn University, he was stationed in Texas, Louisiana and Okinawa as a First Lieutenant and performed duties as briefing and interrogating combat crews and helped to prepare intelligence reports. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal, UN Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. After serving in the Air Force, he then attended the Washburn University School of Law in 1954 and was a member of the Washburn Law Review Board, the Washburn Bar Association, the Delta Theta Phi Legal Fraternity, the American Bar Association and the Kansas and Missouri Bar Associations. In 1957, he was a trial attorney for the National Labor Relations Board and the Labor Council for the Kansas Contractors Association. From 1959 to 1960, he was a lecturer at St. Louis University on the subject of Labor Economics and Labor Legislation. He was a law partner with Eidson, Lewis, Porter and Haynes and later joined the law firm of Frieden, Haynes and Forbes. He previously owned the historic Capper, Curtis and Senate apartments and he and his wife spent many years renovating them to their original condition. William practiced law for over 30 years in Topeka and was later elected to sit on the Topeka City Council. This gave William the opportunity to work directly with his very close childhood friend and Mayor Bill Bunton, to prevent any increases in the property tax mill levy and always focus on decreasing expenditures instead of raising taxes. William and the Mayor had many successful accomplishments together.
William married Lois G. Haynes on March 22, 1952 who recently passed away on December 31, 2023,. He is survived by his two sons, William and Michael - wife Noelia, Steven (passed away in 2009) -wife Bobbi, and his grandchildren Spencer (passed away in 2012) Bailey, Gracie, Will-wife Olivia, Sheldon-partner Chris, Samuel, and two nephews, Mark and Randy Morgan. He was a member of the Countryside Methodist Church and enjoyed many activities with his grandchildren, and weekly family dinners at Cracker Barrel and IHOP.
He was always ready to help someone in need, especially when they needed free legal advice. He enjoyed conversations that focused specifically on politics, finances, economics and world affairs. He had a refined taste in music, and every ride in his car was accompanied by Frank Sinatra radio. In the earlier years, he enjoyed flying to Las Vegas and traveling throughout the U.S. and many different countries overseas.
A private celebration of life will be held at a later date and in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Helping Hands Humane Society, 5720 SW 21st, Topeka, KS 66604.
