Raymond C. "Sarge" Babcock, Jr., 64, of Topeka, passed away Wednesday, December 27, 2023.
Graveside services have been POSTPONED for today, Tuesday, January 9, 2024 at Leavenworth National Cemetery due to weather. Please check back for updated service information.
He was born June 1, 1959, in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, the son of Raymond, Sr. and Marian (Sabastia) Babcock.
Sarge served in the Kansas Army National Guard, serving during Operation Noble Eagle, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Hurricane Katrina Relief. He retired as Master Sergeant after 29 years of service. He also worked as a mixing machine operator and trucker with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, retiring in 2010 after 17 years of service.
He was a member of Local Union 307 and Holton V.F.W. 1367.
In 1993, he married Cheryl Bach in Topeka. They later divorced and remained close friends until his passing.
Survivors include three children, Brian (Wendy) Bach, Dylon Babcock (Cierra Barranco), and Adrianne Babcock (Dillon Leivan); grandchildren, Jesyka, Aiden, Vada, Kora, Hunter, and one on the way; sister, Phyllis (Richard) Applegarth; brother-in-law, Kendall Britton (Nancy); nieces and nephews, Mick, Heather, Brian, Kyle, and Courtney; and numerous great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law, Glenn, and niece, Mandy.
Sarge enjoyed hunting, fishing and being outdoors. One of his favorite things was sharing this passion with his grandchildren. He loved football, never missing a Chiefs game and coaching his boys in little league. He thought America was the greatest country on earth and his proud patriotism was evident to all who knew him.
Visitation will be 11am Sunday, January 7, 2024, followed by services at 12noon at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Mid-Town Chapel. Burial with military honors are pending at this time.
