Matthew Charles Mcelroy

A Good Guy to everyone who knew him, Matthew Charles McElroy, 37, of Gardner, Ks previously of Rochester, Mn & Topeka, passed away Monday, October 16, 2023.
Matthew was first and foremost a father to Isaac, Ainsley, Owen, Evan, and Lucas McElroy. A stay at home dad throughout the lives of his children he also worked during those years as a CDL certified commercial Truck Driver in the beverage industry & more recently much to his joy as a Gardner Edgerton School District School Bus Driver.
After placing on the JCCC President's Honor Roll with a 4.0 GPA in his first year of industrial mechanic training, he recently began work with TGW Logistics as a Resident Automation Tech 1.
He was born June 22, 1986, in Topeka, Kansas, the son of John Edward McElroy III and Annette Ayala-McElroy. He graduated from Seaman High School in 2004. Matthew was recognized as a Kansas High School Honor Scholar and was a proud member of the Seaman High School Marching Band. He later attended Kansas State University, Washburn University and Johnson County Community College.
He was a member of the Grace Episcopal Cathedral in Topeka and as a youth at the Lake Perry Yacht Club. His Episcopalian faith was a strong family tradition. Sailing was a shared father/son adventure, wherein Matthew learned the rules and commanding voice of captaincy from the top sailor, John. Woodworking was the other skill shared and excelled at by Matt and John.
Matthew was a welcome player with online gaming friends and groups. The X-Box was the bonding experience with his children.
He leaves behind his mother, Annette Ayala-McElroy; step-mom, Martha Hodgesmith; grandmother, Carmen Ayala; uncles, Raymond (Tammy) Ayala, Jr., Michael Ayala, James (Dionne) McElroy and Peter McElroy; Aunt Kathy (Bart) Davis and his ex-wife, Jessica Pool. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Elise Josephine McElroy; his father, John Edward McElroy, III; grandparents, Raymond Ayala, John McElroy, II and Natalie McElroy.
A memorial service to honor Matthew will be held with family visitation at 1:00 pm, followed by the service at 2, on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at Penwell Gabel Funeral Home, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka, KS 66604. Memorial contributions may be made to the Matthew McElroy Trust held at CoreFirst Bank for his children and sent to Penwell Gabel Funeral Home, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka, KS 66604.
